Philip trained at University College London and spent two years at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA before joining the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee, Scotland in 1971, where he still works. He was a Royal Society Research Professor from 1984-2010, Director of the Medical Research Council Protein Phosphorylation Unit from 1990-2012, and Director of the Scottish Institute for Cell Signalling from 2008-2012. He founded the Division of Signal Transduction Therapy (DSTT) in 1998, which still operates today and is Europe’s longest running collaboration between academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Philip is best known in science for helping to pioneer the field of “Protein Phosphorylation”, a biological control mechanism that regulates most aspects of cell life. He discovered enzymes that became the targets for new drugs to treat cancer and arthritis and worked out how insulin converts glucose in the blood to its storage form glycogen in muscles. 20 years ago, he switched his research and now studies the interplay between protein phosphorylation and protein ubiquitylation in regulating the innate immune system. Philip’s awards include the Prix Van Gysel of Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine (1992), the Swiss Louis Jeantet Prize for Medicine (1997), the Pfizer Award for Innovative Science in Europe (1999), the Rolf Luft Prize of the Karolinska Institute, Sweden (2006), the UK Medical Research Council’s Millennium Medal (2013) and the Albert Einstein World Award of Science from The World Cultural Council 92014. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Societies of Edinburgh and London (1984), receiving their Royal Medals in 2004 and 2008, respectively. He has also been been elected a Foreign Associate of the National Academies of Sciences of the USA (2008) and Australia (2014). Philip has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Linkoping (Sweden), Debrecen (Hungary) and Madrid (Spain) and from the Universities of Strathclyde, St Andrews, Abertay and Dundee in Scotland for his contributions to science.

Alain Chapel has been developing gene and cell therapy using non-human primates, immune-tolerant mice and rats to protect against the side effects of radiation. He collaborates with clinicians to develop strategies for treatment of patients after radiotherapy overexposures. He has participated in the first establishment of proof of concept of the therapeutic efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of hematopoietic deficit, radiodermatitis and over dosages of radiotherapy. He has contributed to the first reported correction of deficient hematopoiesis in patients (graft failure and aplastic anemia) thanks to intravenous injection of MSCs restoring the bone marrow microenvironment, mandatory to sustain hematopoiesis after total body irradiation. He is scientific investigator of clinical phase II trial evaluating the efficacy of systemic MSC injections for the treatment of severe and chronic radiotherapy-induced abdomino-pelvic complications refractory to standard therapy

Huang Wei Ling has completed her Graduation in Medicine in Londrina State University. She is Specialist in infectious and parasitic diseases, a General Practitionerand Parenteral and Enteral Medical Nutrition Therapist. She was the In-charge of the Hospital Infection Control Service of the City of Franca’s General Hospital, responsible for the control of all prescribed antimicrobial medication.

Dr Susan Joyce (H index=46, >6300 citations) graduated with a B.Sc (joint hons) from Maynooth University in Biology and Mathematics and a research PhD in host-microbe interactions. She was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship to examine cis and trans acting factors affecting mRNA synthesis and gene expression at the Ecole Normal Superieure, Paris which included a stint at the Max Planck Institute, Berlin. Before coming to UCC, Dr Joyce was a postdoctoral scientist at Trinity College Dublin and at the University of Bath, UK. Susan Joyce (BSc, PhD, CM, PGCE) is Faculty at UCC SEFS and a PI in the UCC Food Institute and an investigator in APC Microbiome Ireland. Her research interests revolve around metabolism and altered human, host and microbial metabolic pathways, with food, that can influence health and disease. She leads a metabolomics focused research group, with expertise in diverse areas of host response through small molecule analysis (MS applications), cellular systems, gene expression and signalling readout, clinical interphase, microbial associations in terms of strain isolation, functional and phenotypic characterization including their metabolites and genetics. Areas currently under investigation include (1) metabolomic approach to identify novel biomarkers of microbial dietary ingredients in fermentation and (2) metabolomic signatures in deciphering health and ageing (3) specific microbial enzyme inhibition and applications to alter metabolomic signatures towards healthy weight gain. Susan is a recipient of DAFM and SFI funding. She is a partner in the FP7 project SOPHIA, with a focus on obesity. She represents her School and APC Microbiome Ireland in the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) CABALA for health, where she is a partner. She has published over 90 publications including publications in leading journals including Angewande Chemie. PNAS, GUT, J Hepatol and Nature Comms. She regularly serves as a reviewer for international and national grant awards and for international journals and she is serving as an associate editor Frontiers in Nutrition and Editorial Board of Liver Research. She is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research, and delivers a range of lectures in advanced metabolism at all BSc levels, and college of medicine and health students. She was (student) nominated for the Presidents Prize for Teaching (Dec 2022) and she was Research Team nominated and awarded an Irish Research Council Ally award for mentor-ship (Dec 2021). She is Director of MRes in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from 2021, which is now remodeled and recommenced as MRes in Biochemistry and Biosciences, in AY2021. She is vice-chair of the Irish Mass Spectrometry Society (IMSS) to 2022, Vice Chair of the Research Committee College of SEFS

Dr. Cheng is the founder and director of Dr. Cheng Integrative Health Center and Doctor’s Anti-Aging and Weight Loss Center, of Columbia, SC, since inception in 2003. Dr. Cheng and his colleagues take an integrative approach to help patients with chronic disease esp. diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Dr. Cheng also serves as consultant to Shenzhen BaoAn Central Hospital and Shenzhen Medical Association, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Dr. Cheng is also a consultant to SuHa International Hospital, Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. Dr. Cheng serves on the editorial board of Journal of Nutritional Oncology, China and Orthomolecular Medicine News Service. In recent years, Dr. Cheng grew particularly interested in functional medicine or anti-aging medicine. The current healthcare focuses on symptomatic treatments for many diseases, ignoring the root causes. For example, when we control the blood sugar of a diabetic patient or the blood pressure of a hypertensive patient, we are only treating the symptoms. We are not doing anything to the underlying disease processes. Functional medicine tries to holistically address the disease processes in addition to the symptomatic treatment. Dr. Cheng is a Fellow and board certified anti-aging physician by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) and also a Fellow and board certified, A4m Integrative Cancer Therapy. Dr. Cheng served in the United States Army as a commissioned officer (Major) and an Army physician and completed his Army duty in Dec. 2006. While in the Army, Dr. Cheng served in various positions including Chief and Medical Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Member of Risk Management Committee, Credentialling Committee, and Staff Physician of Soldier Readiness Program, Consultant to the Shaw Air Force Base Laboratory, and College of American Pathologist Inspection Team Leader for the Greenville SC Hospital Lab Inspection.

Dr. Alexandros Makriyannis holds the George Behrakis Trustee Chair in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at Northeastern University and is Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, and Chemical Biology and Director of Center for Drug Discovery at Northeastern University. He obtained his PhD in Medicinal Chemistry and completed his post-doctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley. He moved to the University of Connecticut where he rose to the rank of Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology and Pharmocology. In 2005, he joined Northeastern University and established a Center for Drug Discovery. Dr. Makriyannis has spent the past three decades inventing and applying chemical, biochemical, and biophysical approaches to study the endocannabinoid signaling system and exploring its therapeutic potential. He is known as a pioneer in Chemical Biology. A particular focus of his work has been the discovery and profiling of novel therapeutic candidates for addiction disorders, including cocaine and nicotine abuse, metabolic disorders including obesity, and pain. The results of this research are encompassed in over 450 publications and over 40 patents. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the AAPS Award in Drug Design and Discovery (2002), the ICRS Mechoulam Life Achievement Award in Cannabinoid Research (2006), the Kenneth E. Avis Award in Medicinal Chemistry (2007), the ACS Research Lifetime Acheivement Award in Medicinal Chemistry (2012), the Northeastern Award for Excellence in Research and Creativity (2012), the ACS Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame (2013), the AAPS Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award (2015), the CPDD Nathan B. Eddy Memorial Award (2018) and ICRS President’s Lecture (2019).

Dr. D.Nagasamy Venkatesh is serving as an Assistant Professor at Department of Pharmaceutics, JSS College of Pharmacy, Udhagamandalam. India. Dr. D.Nagasamy Venkatesh is interested in developing certain nanobased drug delivery systems for antiviral and anticancer drugs. His research is also involved in developing sustained/controlled drug delivery systems for certain drugs and analytical and bioanalytical method development for drugs. He serves as a reviewer of more than 25 peer reviewed journals including AAPS, Carbohydrate polymer, Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He serves editorial board member for more than 20 international journals. Dr. D.Nagasamy Venkatesh has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. He worked as Execution contract Director in Med Gas Public Hospital, Italy. He completed his Pharm D from Turin University during 1995. He worked as European specialist in laboratory medicine. Dr. Kalliopi Megari is an experienced psychologist working in the hospital & health care industry. She is a lecturer at University of Western Macedonia in Greece. Skilled in Clinical Neuropsychology, Clinical Research and Learning Disabilities. Graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and attended further education from University of Macedonia, in people with special needs and disabilities. She holds undergraduate degrees in Nursing and Psychology, as well as a Master’s and a PhD in Neuropsychology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has many years of experience working with chronic disease patients as well with people with disabilities. Her work has earned her many prestigious international awards. She has given lectures at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and University of Warsaw. She is postdoctoral researcher and has published more than 10 research articles in journals. She is the Global Engagement Representative of International Neuropsychological Society, General Secretary of the booard of directors and member of the Ethics Committee of Hellenic Neuropsychological Society.
